Somewhere I Belong
Back in March Scott Williams asked whether secular music had a place in the church or not. Responses ranged from those with no problem using secular music in church to those who believed that only “Christian” music should be allowed.
Yet a lot of mainstream groups have spiritual meaning in their songs, whether or not the intent was to glorify God.
This morning I was listening to an old Linkin Park CD and these words really spoke to me like never before:
I wanna heal, I wanna feel what I thought was never real
I wanna let go of the pain I’ve held so long
(Erase all the pain till it’s gone)
I wanna heal, I wanna feel like I’m close to something real
I wanna find something I’ve wanted all along
Somewhere I belong
There are a lot of people standing at our church doors singing the same song. Maybe we could learn a thing or two by listening.

the age old issue…can we take another’s sincerity even pointed to a lie and use it for our truth that glorifies god.
look no further than scripture…luke 4:6…satan says “for it has been given to me”…most feel this is actually satan lying about his authority on earth granted by god…so our own truth contains a lie.

I think there is a ton to learn from secular music, it is the voice of the masses and we need to listen to it to find where to jump in and help

We did a Linkin Park song at Easter “Easier To Run”. Its easier to run and stay in denial than face your pain. Anyway, I talked to a girl at work(in her 20s)about it. Her response? “What the hell kind of church does Linkin Park? Hell, I’d go to a church that plays Linkin Park.” Also did “How Far We’ve Come” Matchbox 20 which we heard was a pivotal song in the spiritual life of one couple who got baptized last summer. Whenever they heard it outside of church, it reminded them of their experience at church and prompted some life change.

Thanks, Scott
Bill and Michael - Reminds me of a scripture where Paul told the old-school church guys not to worry about those they were claiming to be false prophets as long as the gospel was preached.
Roger - Right…. we can’t shelter ourselves in our own little worlds - unless your a sect in Texas.
Joni - Same here. At first I was a little offended, but ended up having the same response when I would hear those songs on the radion.
